The Apple iPhone XR is the third new iPhone this year, after the XS and the XS Max – you can read my opinion here.

The iPhone XR is colorful, attractive, lightweight and comfortable in the hand. It has a powerful processor, a revolutionary screen, an excellent rear camera (although only one) and an exceptional battery life. Without spoiling the surprises, I'll tell you now that in some ways it's the best iPhone that Apple has ever designed. Here are the details.

What does it look like?

This is the band of glbad and aluminum with cushions that accompanies us since the iPhone 6 and the rear window that arrived last year on the iPhone 8.

As Apple has a hard time underlining, this is one of the models in the iPhone's X-Series, which includes a front-screen display and a face ID.

So, although most design elements have been around for a while, its appearance is very modern and new as soon as you look at this display. And because it looks so much like the iPhone XS and XS Max, you have to wonder if you have to spend more money on these more expensive handsets.

This is a question I will keep coming back to in this review, but put it in the context of previous iPhones prices with larger screens, that is 5.5 inches or so. One camera

Yes, that's the first big difference you notice when you look behind the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS. This now-awaited multi-lens camera is nowhere to be seen. Still, there are other high end phones with only one camera, including the Google Pixel 3.

This sensor is identical to the wide angle camera of the iPhone XS, that is to say the latest Apple sensor and improved since the iPhone X with larger pixels and more focal pixels, for faster focusing. Apple could easily have convinced customers to use the sensor from last year to save money, but, and there is a theme here, the XR has been blessed many times with the same components as the iPhone XS only, in this case, with the only, not the twin cameras on the XS price. I will call this when the XR has the same thing as the more expensive model, XS Match.

This means that for features such as Portrait mode, this unique sensor needs to rely on software and machine learning to distinguish the subject from the background and adjust the focus level accordingly.

Well, it's something Google has been doing since Pixel 2, so it's not impossible.

Apple has done so and has integrated one of the deadliest features of the iPhone XS, the adjustable depth-of-field slider, which allows you to decide, once you've taken the picture, of the back blur desired plan (XS Match!).

That's not to say that the XR can do anything the more expensive phone can do. The software knows how to search for human faces and uses it to design Portrait mode.

And only human, as my dog ​​was disappointed to find out. Try taking the Portrait of a dog, cat, other animal, or object effect and you will see a topic on the screen stating that no suitable subject has been found.

But at least, it benefits from improved algorithms developed by Apple since the introduction of Portrait mode. If you notice flaws on the effects in portrait mode (on more cameras than those of Apple), you will be happy to know that they are much better.

So, if your subject has his hand resting on his hip, as if someone had dropped a roll of carpet and no one was noticing it, this background triangle would no longer be perfectly clear because the software did not understand what was happening.

The wide angle sensor is the best of both iPhone XS cameras and it works great here, although the different focal length from that of the telephoto lens requires you to get a little closer to the subject to photograph them.

It's a 12MP sensor but it's the Apple specialties that make it a very good camera. These include larger pixels, additional focus pixels, advanced algorithms, and the neural network on the A12 Bionic chip. Most importantly, Apple's cameras, including this one, rely on the irreproachable good taste of Apple's engineers. Even when the images are heavily processed, they have a realistic and very attractive appearance.

Of course, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro does not have multi-purpose power, but it's an excellent snapper, easily the best camera from Apple.

Material differences

So where did Apple save money so that the nomenclature was low enough to bring down the price as much? In fact, it's not so easy to see, although there are two obvious ones.

The iPhone XR uses an aluminum antenna strip. The XS features a shiny stainless steel band. It is certainly more opulent, but the matte finish of aluminum is perfectly satisfactory. After all, this is what almost every iPhone has been using since the iPhone 6, so we are pretty used to it. In each case, the color corresponds to the rest of the phone. There is therefore a slight blue tinge, a vaporous yellow or a coral muted on the respective XR handsets.

Oh, and there is another place that matches the color: inside the Lightning connector, there is a plug perfectly suited to the interior. It's very hard to see and most people will never notice it, but it's there.

Only Apple.

The level of tightness on the XR is not as high as on the XS. It's IP67 instead of the higher IP68. Thus, it will survive in a meter of water for half an hour, but not in the two meters that the XS can handle. Not really a deal-breaker.

A small design difference to note is that the grille at the base of the iPhone XR is symmetrical, unlike the iPhone XS which has seven holes on the right, four on the left. Some people care about these things.

The other big difference is a little more important, namely the display technology and the resolution.

The resolution on all previous iPhones Plus was 401 pixels per inch (dpi). On the XS and XS Max, this goes to 458ppi. Here, it's just 326ppi. But, since it is the resolution of every iPhone from the iPhone 4, this is not a problem.

As Apple CEO Phil Schiller says, numbers matter less than appearance. And when you look at the screen, this one is superb: bright, detailed and very attractive. It's only when you place it next to the sparkling XS screen that you can see that it's not as neat, nor so alive. The colors do not match the bright shine that OLED can offer. But overall, it's still good.

While we talk about the screen

The problem with the LCD is that you can not bend it as you can with OLED. The intelligent magic of Apple has joined the iPhone X to hide the display driver and create a chin-free phone without a screen on the bottom, well, it is not possible with an LCD screen , glbad as is.

This is why the frame of the iPhone XR is significantly larger than that of the iPhone XS. But it's still a remarkable achievement that no other company has yet managed to match. But there is another drawback to this screen: the absence of 3D Touch, this feature in which to press harder creates a different response than that of gently pressing. I love 3D Touch. Apple has introduced something called Haptic Touch that produces a similar effect, but it's not the same and, most importantly, it's not as fast. Indeed, Haptic Touch requires a longer press before activating and this delay is not something welcome if you try to launch the camera to capture that perfect moment. It is not much longer, but still.

To be fair, most people have rarely used 3D Touch and will not miss it. But I do.

Performance and battery

The processor of the iPhone XR is the A12 Bionic (XS Match!). It's a very big deal because it's an incredibly fast chip, even faster than last year's A11 Bionic, which was pretty much undefeated by its rivals. This is a 7 nm processor, that is, there is room for a lot of technology because every element is so small. The new Huawei Mate 20 Pro also has a 7-nm processor and more are coming. Huawei announced its first, but it was the first to reach the real world, in the iPhone XS and XS Max.

It is so fast that it only uses its full potential in power hungry games or in the latest AR applications. Too fast? Well, at least that means that even if it slows down like phones do, there is a lot of room.

In terms of battery life, this is the only area where the XR really beats the iPhone XS and XS Max. In fact, it's the biggest battery that Apple has ever installed in any of its phones.

So, does that make a difference?

You bet.

Phones usually do not have enough battery and although I still dream of those days when our gadgets will last for months or even years between recharges, this is without a doubt the best battery life. I've never gotten with an iPhone. It's one of the best experiences I've seen on a phone, in fact.

Here's the thing, it will make you spend the day without worry and the next day. If you are a light user, you may not need to recharge every day, but I would suggest it to you, so that you do not worry.

So…?

Although the iPhone XR is lower than the XS and XS Max handsets in many ways, this phone is up to its many strengths.

There is only one camera, but it's as good as the wide angle on the XS, except in Portrait mode, at least for my dog. The processor is identical, so it's as powerful as the most expensive iPhones and, of course, it even beats those iPhones in terms of battery life.
