MARSEILLE, France – Firefighters in Marseille, southern France, found the bodies of three people in the ruins of two collapsed buildings, while the search for victims and survivors continued Tuesday.

A man's body was found in the rubble after the bodies of another man and a woman were found earlier in the day, a spokesman for the Marseilles Fire Department told The Associated Press.

Several people are still missing after the collapse of adjacent multi-story structures on Monday.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said that "air pockets" under the debris meant "hope to locate and find someone who could be saved" .

Castaner reported on the site that 120 police and 80 firefighters had taken part in the search and rescue operation, working all night in the pile of beams and rubble.

The two buildings, one apparently vacant and the other apartment, collapsed Monday at 9 am local time. The authorities indicated that the vacant building was judged to be of inferior quality. We did not know right away why they had collapsed or how many people were living in this building.

Teams of firefighters working with sniffer dogs then destroyed the remains of a third building which they feared they would fall down.

The images of the buildings before their collapse show that one of them has five floors and the other six. Where they were, a large space appeared once the dust and debris had settled.

The cars around the famous old port of Marseille, on the Mediterranean Sea, were covered with a thick dust.
