Here is an intro.
Matthews plays with Johnsson and Kapanen … wild!
Friedman put away his insider 's hat and wore his badyst' s hat again on Nylander 's situation and people get angry … go figure!
The Sharks coach who just got kicked after a game said something salty and furious about Kadri … so weird!
Ok. Quite chatty, let's get on with the game!
FIRST PERIOD
The Leafs start the game with the Tavares line and the puck is dropped!
[20:00 to 15:00]
The game starts with an icing. DRINK!
Matthews gets his first shift, which for me was the most remarkable for a nice Johnsson backcheck.
Marner arrives for his second shift and he takes a penalty, we pbad the PP with our PP1 of misfortune! It starts badly, but once they have repossessed the balloon, they settled in the Sharks area and OH MY GOODNESS, I WANT TO KNOW THIS MOVEMENT! Marner, with the center recessed, pbades to Matthews, who freezes Dell because duh but transmits it to Tavares to get the easiest shot in the goal that he will score. 1-0 Leafs!
Kadri gets a good wrist shot but Dell is golted by Dell. Shortly after, the Sharks came back for a 2 in 1, but Dermott played brilliantly and broke the pbad. Matthews then returned to dance in the shark zone, but lingered on the shot.
The game becomes a bit of a track meet.
[15:00 to 10:00]
The Sharks are putting some pressure in the offensive zone but have no chance to be. In teams, Tavares and Marner ended up with Ennis and they seemed very dangerous for a while.
The line with Matthews and the former Marlies star proved to be very successful, hugging the Sharks. Dermott also played an important role in the game. In fact, he was very adept at pushing the game in the right direction so far. Oh, how I missed Matthews' magic sleeve …
While Matthews attempted a confrontation in the offensive zone following a draw against the Sharks, Johnsson was given a stupid interference penalty and put the Leafs on the PK.
[10:00 to 5:00]
The Sharks settle on a Hainsey gift, but after a small fight in the net, Freddie hides it. Outside the match, Andersen has to make a series of very difficult stops, but he makes those stops. BOOOO! At one pbad attempt, Dermott had a piece, but ended up putting it on a T-shirt so that Hertl could score in the gaping goal. Draw 1-1.
Fortunately, Auston Matthews is a leaf since he fires a penalty shortly after the faceoff. It's worth noting that Babbad started the post-PK shift with Matthews with Tavares and Marner. As it was a faceoff, you know that it was intentional.
Come on Babs, it's just naughty.
Stop me if you've ever heard this one. The Leafs start the power play with their top unit and there are only a few seconds left in power play Marner> Rielly> Matthews> PING! 2-1 leaves.
Omar has the scoop on the Leafs plan to enter this power play:
Unfortunately, the Leafs followed in their own zone with the Kadri line on the ice, but most of the Sharks' shots came from the point.
Oh no, Johnsson fell after a collision in front of the bench as both teams changed. It looks like Labanc looked at it and its ribs got stuck at the edge of an open door. He is up now and seems to be fine, but he will probably have a big bruise tomorrow.
[5:00 to Fin]
Immediately after a draw in the defensive zone, Kadri hits Pavelski in the face with a high stick … and the Sharks have the chance to equalize with their second power play.
The Sharks start the PP with a good puck move, but did not shoot. Hainsey had the opportunity to clear the puck behind the net and he … shot in the bottom of the goal? Millen called it a stroke of luck but he was not hit, blocked or deflected at all, he just shot in goal. Shortly after, Pavelski finally tries his luck, but Freddie conceals it closely. After the faceoff, the AGAIN Sharks set up their own follow-up clinic, but Freddie made an excellent backup of Kane.
Kadri gets out of the box and makes a breakaway, but he cancels the post for a fourth straight game. Bad luck, Naz.
In the final seconds of the period, the Leafs scored another goal in style. Hyman carried it on ice with Tavares on one side and Marner on the other (after having to run to the bench to get a new stick first). Hyman> Marner> Tavares for the second easiest goal he scored. Third help to the Leafs coach who had Marner's staff so fast! 3-1 Leafs.
Thus ends a turbulent first period during which the two teams have shown a lot of skill, especially with regard to their chances of playing on the numerical advantage. The difference so far is that AUSTON MATTHEWS IS A SHEET! THAT IS JOHN TAVARES! AND MITCH MARNER!
Thoughts of the first period
It was a fun hockey period. Mainly because Matthews is back, but also because he has had a lot of good games and scoring opportunities in which the Leafs came out with a two-goal lead!
The period ended at 5v5 with a tie in shot attempts and scoring opportunities. The Sharks leapfrogged the Leafs in PP and chances … probably because Toronto scored so quickly on both occasions.
SECOND PERIOD
And we are back!
[20:00 to 15:00]
The Leafs start the second period with the line Tavares, why not? Tavares quickly fires a penalty after being beaten for the puck along the boards. Millen says that "the Leafs get a lot of penalties with their speed," which leads me to believe that it is part of the ostrich and that he has his head buried in the ground for two weeks .
The Leafs return to the PP and decide to be nice to the Sharks by starting PP2.
[Narrator: it was not merciful]
Keeping with the shot on goal, Johnsson with the game really smart to put the back to the net and make a pbad pbad to Marleau to put it at the bottom of the nets. 4-1 leaves. Poor Dell … he might need a reboot and a lot more ram to keep up.
Fun fact: Marleau has now scored a goal against the 31 franchises currently in the NHL.
Following the tradition of the game, the Leafs chained with their own penalty, Dermott being called for interference. Sharks have the chance to make it a two-goal match with their dangerous-looking power play.
[15:00 to 10:00]
The PK Leafs looked much better this time as they scored twice and created a chance to score with Zaitsev. They obviously took advantage of a burst from the top of the circle to at least create a confrontation in offensive zone. Unfortunately, the Sharks have always scored with Pavelski and may have cashed against Freddie with a timer with only a second to play with the penalty Dermott. 4-2 leaves.
Babbad, the mad scientist, begins the post-PK transition with Matthews, Kadri and Marleau, why not? They have a chance to score, but Dell's firewall stopped him.
After that, the Sharks looked like the most dangerous team with equal strength, which allowed the Leafs to win on a few relays without any real backlash from the Leafs.
Thank God for Kapanen. He canceled a frosting with his speed and helped to create a figure for Matthews, who sent him back to Kapanen to give him an unexpected chance. Shortly after the Matthews line returned to the offensive zone, Johnsson fed Dermott from the point, but he was spinning away. The offset continues with the filtering of the fourth line. They can not get a goal, but they really look great.
[10:00 to 5:00]
Unfortunately, the next shifts did not seem so great. The Leafs have still been for good chances against. Until once again, the Matthews line jumps on the ice and Kapanen AGAIN creates zone inputs and offensive zone time using his speed.
The Leafs' second fastest player, who is obviously Josh Leivo, followed suit and canceled a frosting by overtaking the Sharks defenseman. This ended up leading to Sharks icing as the Leafs tried to stay out of their own zone for a while.
[Narrator: they did not succeed]
From the beginning of the faceoff, the Sharks controlled the puck and Burns had a good chance of sneaking into the net. A moment later, Freddie had to make a nice backup glove.
Again, the Leafs are caught in their own zone and Freddie has to make some stops. The Leafs did little except clear the puck and maybe put the puck in the offensive zone for a few seconds before the Sharks sent it back. Freddie recorded up to 22 saves in the match.
[5:00 to Fin]
More of the same for the next minute and a half. I do not remember the last time the Leafs had a good chance to score, which is more than 10 seconds in the Sharks area. Even though the Sharks are on the puck, they won the faceoff and went straight back to the Leafs area. The Tavares line nearly scored a late goal in the last minute of the period, but ended with a 4-2 lead for the Leafs.
Thoughts of the second period
The period started strong for the first half, but the second half was dominated by the Sharks. The Leafs stopped all offensive while the Sharks surrounded them and had tons of shots and chances. You can see where everything started to go wrong too:
THIRD PERIOD
We are back! Hopefully with more offense from the Leafs.
[20:00 to 15:00]
The Tavares line starts the period off right, with Hyman's trademark leading to a penalty in the first minute. Back at the PP, the Leafs go, where they are 3/3 of that game.
The best PP unit had good chances in the first minute but did not show anything. The best chance came from a shot at Rielly's tip with Tavares and Kadri just for the juicy rebound, but failed to overtake Dell.
The second unit remains on for the rest of the numerical superiority, but it could not do anything. Just after the end of the race, Marner had a clear breakaway in which he attempted to sneak through Dell's five holes, but Pickard was not him.
Some poor pbades and turnovers when they had easy possession led the Sharks to pull themselves together in the Leafs. At one point, there were two single Sharks on the front, and only one big, desperate game of Rielly broke a very dangerous chance.
[15:00 to 10:00]
The Leafs finally have some time in the extended offensive zone thanks to Marner and Hyman who caused turnovers and intercepted attempts at compensation. The Leafs take advantage of momentum to defend a frantic race in the other direction and frost the puck accordingly. They were a good line in the third period, with the Matthews line. I know I know, it's a hard-hitting journalism.
Dermott performs an excellent defensive game after his stick has exploded to the point. Evander Kane had a chance to take a partial break but Dermott jumped back and, without a stick, just muscled the puck.
This period was much better as the Leafs reduced the gap in attempts and scoring opportunities.
[10:00 to 5:00]
We have a goal for the good guys! After the Sharks have frozen the puck, the Matthews line begins for the draw. They win the faceoff and almost the goal of the game, but recover the puck after and follow for a Johnsson sniper over Dell's shoulder. In fact, the retransmission shows that Matthews had a very clever trick for him to pbad through Dell for the goal, his second goal and his third point. 5-2 leaves.
Andersen was a soothing presence as pucks flew around him. After years of grbadroots players like Carolina / Philadelphia / Calgary / Arizona, it feels good to have peace of mind.
What's not good is that the Sharks are dirty now because the game seems out of control, while Kadri seemed to favor his hand after a good cut.
[5:00 to Fin]
The Sharks created a chance on a whim, but Freddie got up once more. The game seems to be settled between the two teams, accepting somehow the end result. They are still trying, but it is not the affair of high altitude flight of the first period nor the desperate offensive thrust of the Sharks in the second period.
You also see more third and fourth lines of the Leafs with the game in hand.
So of course, all that has been said, and the Sharks score in the last two minutes. Ozzie was just beaten by his man and Donskoi went on to Karlsson (no, not that one, the other) for the goal and the goal. 5-3 leaves.
Dell is fired two minutes from the end because the Sharks have an emergency again. The Leafs resist and hold on for the 5-3 win!
BUDS ALL DAY!
