Former England director Glenn Hoddle remains in serious condition at the hospital after a heart attack, his spokesman said in a statement.

Hoddle collapsed in a London television studio at the age of 61. A source close to the family told a former teammate that Hoddle was "about to die" and was saved by the quick action of a BT Sport employee who knew how to use a defibrillator.

"Glenn remains in serious condition in the hospital after suffering a heart attack yesterday. He continues to respond well to treatment, "said a spokesman for Hoddle. "The family is grateful to all members of the football family – and beyond – who have sent nice messages of support, they are very much appreciated.

"In particular, Glenn and his family wish to publicly thank the BT Sport staff who treated him immediately on the set after his collapse. Glenn is now supported by the NHS's professional medical services, who have also been exemplary in helping her and her family over the past 24 hours.

"The doctors advised Glenn to rest. As a result, his family reiterated their request for privacy during this time. "

Hoddle, a media lover who was in London studios to preview the match between Brighton and Wolves in Robbie Savage's show, collapsed after the show and was taken to the hospital after being listened to by colleagues.

Hoddle has played for Tottenham, Monaco, Swindon and Chelsea for two decades. One of the most gracious and talented footballers in England, he was part of the Spurs teams that won the FA Cups of 1981 and 1982 and scored eight goals in 53 games for England.

After becoming a Swindon player-coach and having inspired him to move into the Premier League in 1993, he took over the same role at Chelsea. He drove England to the 1998 World Cup, before taking over Southampton, Spurs and Wolves until 2006, when he turned to television.
