Six of the region's top swimmers are in Nova Scotia this week competing at the Special Olympics in the summer of 2018.

Bobbi-Lyn Cleland and Rita Savoie of the Dundas Seahawks, John Wbad of the Mount Hamilton and Stephenie Anderson, Emily Boycott and Conner Mahoney of the Oakville Marlins will be in the pool in Antigonish, NS. They practiced together regularly while they were preparing for the big event.

For Cleland, a swimmer for 28 years, this will be her fourth participation in the national event. But this time, it's a bit special because she has a family in Nova Scotia who will compete in the competition.

"They come to see me swim for the first time," said resident of Ancaster who also participated in the world contest. championships in 2011.

To earn a spot at the 2018 Summer Games, athletes had to win a medal at the 2016 Ontario competition. The swimmers who won a medal in the four events at Antigonish deserve a place at the 2019 World Games in Abu Dhabi.
