Instagram takes a step forward to become more accessible by adding automatic and manual descriptions of photos for visually impaired users.
"We're introducing two new enhancements that make it easy to use Instagram for the visually impaired.", Writes Instagram. "With over 285 million visually impaired people in the world, we know that many people could benefit from a more accessible Instagram."
First, a new artificial intelligence system will automatically generate photo descriptions via screen readers when visually impaired users browse the Stream, Explorer and Profile sections of the application. The feature uses an object recognition technology that studies each photo and provides a list of recognized elements in the image.
If you want more control over the description of your photos, Instagram now allows you to add custom alternative text. In Advanced settings when you publish a new photo, a new option called Write an alternative text.
This allows you to provide a richer description than what the AI is currently able to create.
"These are just the first steps towards creating a more accessible Instagram," said the company owned by Facebook.
