Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with community leaders from the southern cities of Israel on the Gaza border, warning that Israel was engaged in a "long battle". Netanyahu's visit comes Monday after an informal ceasefire ended to end 24 hours of fighting with Hamas militants who had threatened to turn into a total war.

Israel shelled Hamas targets in Gaza in its most mbadive bombing since the 2014 war, while militants fired dozens of rockets at Israel that halted daily life in the region.

Netanyahu said that he had ordered the army to end the Gaza campaign to send kites and incendiary balloons across the border to target Israeli farms and nature reserves.

He said that Hamas would face a "wall of steel" if it continued its aggression against Israel.

Tensions ran high along the border between Israel and Gaza for several months. A ceasefire in late May followed the biggest outbreak of violence between the parties in four years.
