PITTSBURGH – Jordan Eberle scored two goals in the second period to help the New York Islanders get away from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 6-3 win on Tuesday night.
Before the game, the Penguins staged a tribute to the victims of the Saturday synagogue shootings in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. This included a eleven-second moment of silence in memory of the eleven people killed.
Eberle scored his second and third goals for the Islanders, who swept a three-game road trip. Brock Nelson scored his sixth goal of the season and his fifth goal in five games, while Tom Kuhnhackl, who won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh, scored his first goal as an Islander. Andrew Ladd and Matt Martin also scored for New York, who won four out of six after starting season 2-3.
The Islanders play eight of their first eleven games on the road for the first time in their history.
Robin Lehner stopped 23 of 25 shots, but he left the game after the second period. Thomas Greiss stopped 12 shots. No reason was immediately given for the change.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Dominik Simon scored for Pittsburgh, ending his four-game winning streak. The Penguins outclbaded the 23-6 opposition during a four – game road trip to Canada 's perfect match.
Crosby has scored six goals and nine points in his last four games after scoring his first six scoreless games. Malkin has a sequence of eight games.
Matt Murray stopped 5 of 9 shots before being shot past Eberle's power play goal. Casey DeSmith made 14 stops in relief.
Ladd and Nelson gave the Islanders the advantage early in the first period, but Simon and Crosby countered to equalize.
The Islanders led the way with three goals in the second period in the space of 4:17.
Martin finished the time with Casey Cizikas and Eberle scored the next two goals to lead 5-2.
Stronger than hate
The Penguins' players wore a special 'Stronger than Hate' crest (stronger than hate), which included the team's logo and the Star of David. The Islanders wore a similar sticker on their helmets.
A black-and-white silhouette of the city with the words "Stronger than Hate" was displayed on the dashboard during the pre-match ceremony, while a video tribute was played before the confrontation. Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert, accompanied by Anthony Burke and Mike Smigda, officers injured during the attack, attended a handover ceremony.
The Penguins held a blood drive on Monday. The team also donated to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, in addition to a fund created by the City of Pittsburgh's security department for the benefit of police officers injured during the attack .
