Man who has served his sentence, 2 years probation for assault against an autistic man

A 25-year-old man videotapedly beating an autistic man at a Mississauga bus terminal was sentenced to two years in prison and probation.

Ronjot Dhami pleaded guilty to aggravated badault on Wednesday, in connection with the March 13 beating.

A judge sentenced him to 12 months in prison and two years in probation. However, given the time spent in jail, Dhami will be released immediately.

Dhami was one of three men seen in a widely shared video published by the Peel Regional Police and showing the badault of a 29-year-old autistic man.

The victim was sitting on a stairway at One One Station putting his in-line skates when the attackers suddenly attacked him, repeatedly punching and kicking him while he was there. stood on the ground.

Ronjot was the last of the three men to surrender to the police on March 26, and has been in detention ever since.

Two other suspects, identified as Parmvir "Parm" Singh Chahil, 21, and Jaspaul Uppal, 21, were also charged. Their cases have not yet been proven in court.

Dhami's lawyer, Glen Henderson, agrees with the prosecutor on the sentence.

At the sentencing hearing, the judge described the three men as "strangers" to the victim and described the attack as "unprovoked."

The judge added that Dhami had come from British Columbia to Ontario to build a better life.

"Although it's a euphemism to say your departure is bad in Ontario, you have the opportunity to rehabilitate yourself," said the judge.

Dhami expressed regret by addressing the audience room, saying, "I'm sorry for what I did."

As part of his probation, Dhami can not travel within 100 meters of the Square One shopping center or the bus terminal, or 500 meters from the victim's residence.

He can not be in contact with the co-accused, Chahil and Uppal, nor possess a weapon of any kind for the rest of his life.

The identity of the victim is protected by a publication ban.
