Mississauga-based meat packaging manufacturer Maple Leaf Foods Inc. announced Monday that it will close its Brampton poultry plant and two other Ontario sites to consolidate its operations in London, Ontario.
The company issued a press release informing workers and investors that it will open a new 660 million dollar and 640,000 square foot poultry plant in London. .
Maple Leaf's poultry packing plant in Brampton is located at 73 Orenda Rd.
"We deeply regret the impact these eventual closures will have on our people and communities," said CEO and President Michael H. McCain in a statement released on November 26.
"Even if these closures take place in many years, we inform our employees well in advance, allowing us to communicate and support them openly during this long-term transition." Services to help them eventually find a new job, "he added.
The company did not say in the release how many workers would be affected by the Brampton plant. – but indicated that the three plants chosen for closure were out of date and limited the company's growth potential.
"Each of these plants is between 50 and 60 years old and constraints of location, area and infrastructure limit expansion and upgrading opportunities to meet growing market demand.
