Mary Moran Named Chief Executive Officer of Calgary Olympic Bid Corporation

Mary Moran was announced as chief executive of the organization charged with investigating a possible Calgary bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Moran will leave his post President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development has been working since 2010 to badume this new role.

She will badume her new responsibilities on August 13th.

Calgary 2026, as it is called, has already established the first 16 members of its 20 – member board of directors and has appointed Scott Hutcheson as chairman of the June board of directors. .

Joining Hutcheson as vice chairman of the board is six-time Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser.

Hutcheson stated that Moran is the first woman to run an Olympic bid in Canada.

The organization is responsible for continuing to explore the possibility of an offer, to establish a more accurate estimate of the costs of hosting the games and, if the offer advances , to produce the specifications to be submitted to the International Olympic Committee.

The announcement comes a day after Calgary City Council voted to fund the organization with an additional $ 5.1 million. The councilors came out of an in camera meeting with concerns about communicating with other levels of government about funding commitments.

Some Board members suggested that these issues will need to be resolved if the bid is to survive after the September 10 Board meeting.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said that a vote at this meeting will determine whether the city proceeds to a plebiscite on hosting games or abandons the idea.
