With the support of a panel of international experts composed of Prof Javier Gisbert & Dr Adrian Mc Nicholl (Spain), Professor Francesco Franceschi (Italy), Pr Peter Malfertheiner (Germany) and methodologists, a new study was conducted to evaluate different strategies for Helicobacter pylori diagnosis of infection and control of eradication.
The results were presented by Dr. Adrian McNicholl (University Hospital of the Princess, Madrid, Spain) to XXXIst International Workshop on Helicobacter and the Microbiota in Inflammation and Cancer in Kaunas (Lithuania) the 14thth September 2018 during a "state of the art" session.
The study shows that a "Test & Treat strategy" involving the use of urea breath tests as recommended in Spain is as effective as simple endoscopy and has proven to be cheaper and more cost effective than the symptomatic treatment strategy for treating dyspeptic patients. This strategy also seems to be the most cost-effective way to prevent gastric cancer.
Pr Javier Gisbert, (University Hospital of La Princesa, Madrid, Spain) stated: "Although this Test & Treat" the strategy is incorporated into the guidelines in multiple countries, the badysis of HP's European registry covering more than 20 countries,000 patients shows that it's not always implemented. We must teach our colleagues to align clinical practice with the guidelines and the results of this business case are an excellent opportunity for this."
Jean-Nicolas Vernin, President of Mayoly Spindler said: "As a key player in the field of managing Helicobacter pylori infection, Mayoly Spindler is very proud to support this project with the goal of improving the diagnosis and management of patients infected with HP and help prevent peptic ulcer and gastric cancer around the world."
By sensitizing health authorities, insurers, doctors, pharmacists and patients to the need for early diagnosis and eradication of hp infection, this study will help develop effective prevention programs against peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.
