Microsoft's new Surface Go is still not an iPad killer

Microsoft is back with a new version of Surface hardware. But, as with the rest of the surface line, it does not appear that Surface Go will have a significant impact on the markets for which it seems to be aiming.

  Surface Go

Hardware

Billed As the "Smallest, Lightest, and Most Affordable Surface" to date, Microsoft's new Go Surface uses the seventh-generation Pentium Gold 4415Y processor in a chbadis with a 1,800 x 1,200 pixel PixelSense display. Rear Cameras, Surface Connect Magnetic Charging and Charging Port, USB-C Port, MicroSD Card Reader, Headphone Jack and Surface Friction Toggle Stand.

Wi-Fi models only will be available at launch, with cellular versions. Later this year.

Like other Surface materials, Surface Go is compatible with Surface Pen, the Microsoft stylus that offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, low latency, and high precision input. Other supported accessories include a low-touch cover with touch pad corresponding to the dimensions of the new model, as well as the surface mobile mouse

The Surface Go comes with Windows 10 in "S" mode. It can be moved to Windows 10 Home for free, and Windows 10 Pro is available as a $ 50 upgrade.

Surface Go will be pre-order on Tuesday, July 10 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal , Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States before the availability of stores on August 2nd.

Microsoft will expand sales to China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand in the coming weeks, with more regions to follow.

This is Microsoft's third crack on a less expensive surface material. The first effort of Windows RT failed, and the Intel Atom Surface 3 device was not very successful either.

Problems at the bottom of the scale

The biggest problem for the user oriented performance with the $ 399 model will be 4 GB of RAM that the device has. Add to that the very slow eMMC that the cheapest model uses for storage, and the device is pretty embarrbaded from the start.

A second model is also available for pre-order now, with 128GB of SSD storage eliminating the speed of eMMC, and 8GB of RAM. The high-end model sells for $ 549

Microsoft itself recommends at least 8GB for Windows 10. And, like the iPad, a keyboard is optional, and in addition. It starts at $ 99 for the Microsoft solution

  Surface Range

As for the rest of the range, the Surface Laptop costs $ 999. The Surface Pro tablet starts at $ 799 without a keyboard. Both are significantly faster than the Pentium Gold 4415Y in Surface Go.

It seems that the Surface Go exists more to sell potential buyers to the Surface Laptop or Surface Pro, than as a viable product to own it. the market

But … why?

Windows, in and of itself, is not a bad operating system. In many ways, it's an engineering miracle that it works, given the first principles that require taking care of disparate material combinations ..

These first principles are why tablets like Surface Go and others of its kind may exist in the first place, running the same software. But Windows 10 is by no means a touch-sensitive operating system – to its detriment on the shelves.

As we have already said, Apple likes to maintain the "whole stack", and remains a software company, more than a hardware one. If you read AppleInsider you are probably in agreement with us that macOS and iOS are the right tools for the tasks they fulfill, rather than sabotaging a single system. Exploitation for a myriad of needs

. hardware, our best guess why Microsoft deployed the Surface Go is to try to capture the market share of Chromebooks, hoping that the Windows spirit sharing will bring the day. But at this price without a keyboard, it will not do so for the same reasons that the iPad is struggling powerfully in this sector.

From the point of view of consumers and Windows-centric companies, are better Windows tablets and complete laptops from other manufacturers. Dell, Acer and Asus have many choices with better performance than the Low Surface Go, like many others, for less money.

Compared to other Windows hardware vendors, it even fails as a laptop replacement. How will this compare to Apple's new advertising focus by positioning the iPad as a laptop replacement remains to be seen. But, given the mediocre performance of the surface line in a shrinking PC market, right now it does not seem like it's going to make a dent at all.

This time, Apple is in a better position, with a better price. and faster solution to the problem of the tablet with the sixth-generation iPad released in the spring. Admittedly, Apple is now in a different position in this battle with Microsoft against the rest of the others over nearly 40 years of skirmishes.
