NASA pilots piloted the QSF18 supersonic search device, which does not produce sound.
Usually, airplanes crossing the sound barrier generate a huge sound, but NASA's jets produce only a thud.
The space agency said the purpose of the tests was to monitor the response of people and sensors on the ground to what is known as "shock".

"This is the first time in decades that we have used a large community as part of our supersonic research.
"NASA conducted similar tests at our Armstrong flight research center, using similar sounds created by the same F / A-18.
"We measured noise levels and the impact on structures, and also interviewed people to see if they were uncomfortable, to make sure these tests are safe and well planned."
