TORONTO – Another price increase is nearing completion for Netflix Canada's subscribers, as competition is heating up among the largest streaming video services.
The company behind "Narcos" and "Orange is the new black" introduces its largest price increase so far for new subscribers and current members.
The standard Netflix package will now cost $ 3 more, or $ 13.99 a month, to watch content on two screens at a time.
The basic package, which does not offer high definition video and only allows one streaming stream, amounts to $ 9.99 per month.
Premium plan subscribers pay $ 3 more – or $ 16.99 per month – for up to four simultaneous streams and one ultra-high definition 4K video.
Netflix indicates that higher prices are applied immediately for new subscribers, while existing users will be notified by email before their bills increase in the coming weeks.
The company recently raised prices for most dollar plans about a year and a half ago.
Netflix says the initiative will help fund upcoming TV shows and movies, as well as the overall enhancements to the Netflix platform.
However, the company will also face intense competition next year, as the number of streaming platforms in the Canadian market offering attractive offers increases.
Earlier this month, Bell Media launched a new level of its Crave streaming service, which includes a selection of recent Hollywood movies and new HBO programs. The package, dubbed Crave +, costs about $ 20 a month.
Next year, Disney will enter the market with its own streaming platform. Disney + is expected to be full of original films and series, including a movie called "Star Wars: Rogue One" and a Marvel superhero show based on Loki's "Thor" character. and "The Avengers".
Other platforms could also progress, including a new service operated by Criterion, specializing in clbadic films, and CBS All Access, which strengthens its original program library including "Tell Me A Story" and "Strange Angel. "
