Nokia 8.1 spotted in list of devices supported by ARCore, launch seems imminent

According to rumors, Nokia 8.1 would be the global variant of the Nokia X7 launched in China last month

Although HMD Global has not yet released details on Nokia 8.1, the unannounced model has been added to Google's list of devices supported by ARCore. This new revelation comes a few weeks after the publication of a report suggesting the worldwide launch of the Nokia X7 while the Nokia 8.1 appeared online. A Geekbench list of the new Nokia phone has also recently alluded to the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and 4GB of RAM. The smartphone should also run on Android 9.0 Pie.

According to the updated list of supported devices, the Nokia 8.1 is one of the few models of HMD Global to support Google's ARCore to offer advanced augmented reality (AR) experiences. The mention of the new Nokia model, which was live at the time of filing this story, was reported for the first time by NokiaPowerUser.

The list of devices supported by ARCore does not reveal any Nokia 8.1 specification. However, the Geekbench list appeared on the Web last month highlights a Snapdragon 710 and 4GB of RAM on the new Nokia phone. The list of references also mentioned Android 9.0 Pie.

A recent report pointed out that, if the Nokia X7 launched in China last month was originally to arrive on the world markets under the name of Nokia 7.1 Plus, HMD Global's product manager, Juho Sarvikas, had changed his mind and had decided to bring the new smartphone global markets like the Nokia 8.1. The new model could arrive next year, but it is not supposed to come before the Mobile World Congress (MWC).

Unlike its name, the Nokia 8.1 should not be compatible with the Nokia 8 and Sirocco 8 upscale in terms of specifications. The high-end smartphone models are powered by the Snapdragon SoC 835, while the Nokia 8.1 is up to now featuring a Snapdragon SoC 710. Nevertheless, the new model is expected to help the Finnish giant to strengthen the competition for Samsung and Xiaomi, which largely dominate the mid-market smartphone market.

HMD Global launched the Nokia X7 in China last month with a price of 1,699 CNY (about 17,800 Rs) for the storage model at 4GB RAM / 64GB. The smartphone also offers a variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage at 1,999 CNY (approximately 20,900 Rs) and the high-end 6GB RAM / 128GB integrated storage model at 2,499 CNY (approximately 26,100 Rs).
