Masashi Takahashi, the producer of Octopath Traveler said that the game is underway developed as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI .
In an interview with Jeuxvideo.com at the Japan Expo in France, Takahashi and Yasunori Nishiki, composer of Octopath Both men grew up playing the clbadic JRPG of the SNES and wanted to reach a level of play that met the standards on which they had been raised.
Takahashi spoke in detail of how Final Fantasy VI specifically affected the main aspects of design and mechanics in Octopath:
"We wanted to work on a new IP and it was important for us to have visual style of impact that would appeal to the players.In terms of game mechanics, if we had conceived Bravely Default as an evolution of Final Fantasy V we created Octopath Traveler as an evolution of the Final Fantasy VI . "
When the project was just starting, the developers of Octopath made a demo exclusively with pixel art, but found that this style was "more beautiful in their memories". This revelation is at the origin of the recognizable visual pixel and 3D blend seen in the game's demos and trailers.
