One person falls from five floors at Vancouver Island University; coroner called

One person died after falling from the fifth floor of the Vancouver Island University Library on Monday afternoon.

B.C. The coroners service is under investigation and no criminal act is suspected.

A little after noon, the Nanaimo RCMP were called to attend a medical emergency at Nanaimo University after someone on the top floor of the library collapsed.

The library was closed on Monday and clbades were canceled.

Al Cumbers, VIU Associate Vice President of Facilities and Ancillary Services, said students who had seen what had happened were interviewed by the police.

Cumbers said that for reasons of confidentiality, he could not give details about the age of the person or whether he was a student or not. The university did not reveal any information about what led to the incident.

Students and employees have been informed of where to find support for counseling, Cumbers said. Students can get advice by visiting Office of Student Affairs Office 200 and employees can contact Homewood Health.
