Poor oral hygiene associated with the risk of several chronic diseases

New Delhi, June 19 (ANI): It is important to pay close attention to oral care, as poor oral health can increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by 75%, a study finds. The study published in the "United European Gastroenterology Journal" badyzed a large cohort of more than 469,000 people in the UK and examined the link between oral health problems and the risk of many gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the liver, colon, rectum and pancreas. Participants whose oral health was poor were more likely to be younger women, living in socio-economically disadvantaged areas and consuming fewer than two servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The biological mechanisms by which poor oral health may be more badociated with liver cancer, rather than with other cancers of the digestive tract, are currently uncertain. One explanation is the potential role of the oral and intestinal microbiome in the development of the disease. Another theory explaining the higher risk of cancer due to poor oral health suggested that participants with a large number of missing teeth could change their diet by eating softer and potentially less nutritious foods, which would affect the risk of liver cancer.
