The officials have a plan B for the main event of UFC 231.
The promotion announced on Wednesday that Renato Moicano would be a replacement for featherweight champion Max Holloway or his challenger Brian Ortega before the fight for the main title title scheduled for UFC 231 on Dec. 8 in Toronto.
Moicano (13-1-1) was originally expected to fight Mirsad Bektic, but was found without an opponent when Bektic recently retired from the map. Winner of five of his six UFC fights, including major wins over Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens, Moicano wanted to be booked at UFC 231 at some capacity in case Holloway or Ortega could not compete. His only loss was against Ortega in July 2017.
This news provides insurance for a match that has already been canceled once. Holloway was supposed to defend his title against Ortega at UFC 226 last July, but he was removed from the fight a few days before the fight night due to concussion-like symptoms. This is the second time in a row that Holloway has been eliminated from the championship after the New York State Sports Commission found him ineligible for a fight for the lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov at the UFC 223.
