The UFC Fight Night 138 card in Moncton, New Brunswick, was not very good on paper, but it was a little better inside the Octagon.

In the main event, Anthony "Lionheart" Smith, who regained momentum, extended his winning streak and climbed to the light heavyweight standings with a third-round win over Volkan Oezdemir, ranked 2nd. Smith has now won three consecutive bouts, all at 205 pounds, but his loss to Oezdemir has earned him his first win against a top-five opponent.

Oezdemir had positive moments in the first and second rounds with kicks and maximum control. However, Smith's game plan, as evidenced by an interview he granted to Shaheen Al-Shatti, of MMA Fighting, was to allow Oezdemir to get tired before playing the action.

That's exactly what he did. In the third round, Smith started moving forward with hard, straight hands and blows. Oezdemir said the shots broke his nose and breathing. In the end, Smith takes a takedown at the right time and tries to take the back of Oezdemir. Once he locked his two hooks, Smith waited patiently for the opportunity to lock the throttle.

The opportunity arose and Smith ended the fight by strangling, forcing an Oezdemir to fire.

Smith was tired and was suffering the effects of kicking at Oezdemir 's leg, but he delivered one of the best post – fight interviews / calls for a shot at the title that I' ve got. I have never seen or heard.

He entered the No. 10 ranked fight in the division, but now, with a win over No. 2 fighter in his division, he could put his point forward in his next fight. Obviously, things are complicated and we will have to determine if he is suffering from leg injuries caused by kicking Oezdemir because he was limping badly after the fight, but no one is badier than Smith at the moment.

Jon Jones is back in December and will face No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson. Jones also did not seem too impressed with Smith's victory.

According to what's going on with Daniel Cormier (if he's stripped of the 205-pound title), the winner of the Jones-Gustafsson bout could be the champion.

If this is the case, it is possible that Smith is looking to challenge the winner in 2019, especially if Cormier beats Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 and fights Brock Lesnar as expected next year. The other options are clashes with Dominick Reyes or the winner of the fight Ilir Latifi-Corey Anderson. These bouts could be a last step before giving Smith the chance to win the gold medal.

We may not know for sure what will happen before December, an important figure for the UFC light heavyweight division.

Smith's Victory earned him one of the performance bonuses. The other went to Don Madge for this bad finish of Te'Edwards by KO during the preliminary round of the UFC Fight Pbad:

Don Madge (8-3-1) blew up Te Edwards' hype, making a dominant first-round turn with the second-best shots! The two-time EFC champion has had a five-game winning streak; he finished the eight career victories. # UFCMoncton pic.twitter.com/icpTguXarl

– Tanuki Usman (@Hamderlei) October 27, 2018

Madge's victory was even more impressive because Edwards was such a prospect. He looked like a world champion in Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender series and had to make some noise in the UFC. He will have to wait for his second fight to make his mark.

Madge and Smith earned an extra $ 50,000 for their impressive finishes. The night fighting bonuses ($ 50,000 each) went to Nasrat Haqparast and Thibault Gouti. Their fall was clearly the best of the event. Haqparast won the well-deserved victory as a result of a unanimous decision, but Gouti's toughness and some of the bodywork that he had done on the second lap made the battle distracting.

The next show for the UFC will be the UFC 230 payout featuring Cormier vs. Lewis next Saturday at Madison Square Garden. At one point, it seemed like a very strong card, but wounds and indecisive fighters wreaked havoc.

As things stand, it's always a chance to meet one of the greatest players of all time at Cormier. Stay tuned for pre-event coverage and a live blog of the event.
