An investigation by the Special Investigations Unit resulted in charges being laid against a member of the Waterloo Region Police Service, according to a press release.
On March 31, the Hamilton Police Service was investigating a break-in at a property in Flamborough.
A vehicle was stolen from the property and found in the vicinity of Dickie Settlement Road in Cambridge at approximately 4:45 pm.
The WRPS was notified and officers were sent to the area.
One of the officers found the man and, after an interaction, unloaded his firearm several times, according to a report from the UES.
The suspect was hit once and taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to a press release from the UES, Sgt. Richard Dorling, a member of the WRPS force for 21 years, has been charged.
He faces a charge of attempted murder, aggravated badault, intentional discharge from a firearm and discharge of firearms – reckless endangerment.
Sgt. Dorling was arrested by members of the USSU on November 27 and released on condition that he did not contact the complainant nor have a firearm.
He was scheduled to appear in a Kitchener court on December 19th.
A WRPS press release indicated that under the Ontario Police Services Act, Sgt. Dorling was put on remunerated administrative suspension.
The Service's Professional Standards Branch would also conduct a post-trial review.
