Special Olympics in Sault needs 400 volunteers

Sault Ste. Marie will host the Special Olympics Ontario 2019 Provincial Winter Games from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.
The games will bring about 500 athletes and coaches, along with their friends, families, and fans to the Sault.
To make this huge event successful, local organizers need approximately 400 volunteers to badist staff.
The basic volunteer responsibilities and roles include:
• Assisting in setup of equipment for events and ceremonies
• Distribution of medals and presentation pillows to sport
• Monitoring medal counts
• Marshaling of athletes
• Assisting with duties throughout the event for food services (buffet dinner, breakfast, lunch, and)
• Registration and providing information to family and spectators
• Accreditation badistance at each hotel
• Assisting in all sport competitions
Every volunteer is highly encouraged to attend ceremonies at GFL Memorial Gardens on the Jan. 31, at 7:30 pm Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and an appreciation luncheon at the Legion Hall on Sunday, Feb. 3.
Volunteer minimum requirements:
• Minimum age of 16 to volunteer
• Children aged 10-15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian
• Must commit to at least four hours
• Must complete a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening, which is provided to all residents of Sault Ste. Marie volunteering for games
• Must complete an online orientation
• Must attend one in-person volunteer orientation session in January

• GFL Memorial Gardens (Opening & Closing Ceremonies)
• Search Mountain Resort (Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Snowshoeing)
• John Rhodes Community Center Arena (Speed ​​Skating, Figure Skating)
• Community First Curling Center (Curling)
