From a couple reviewed after 50 years of marriage at the beginning of the Ladies Sidesaddle Racers – the Calgary Stampede parade is full of surprises and twists this year
Among its more than 100 entries on the five-kilometer road, the parade will aim to give the public a taste of the Stampede Field offerings, including unique tributes to the Grandstand Show celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
"We wanted to make a stronger connection between the parade and the Stampede," said Keith Marlowe, media coordinator for the Stampede Parade.
Among these connectors will be the eight members of the Winecred Harvey Ladies Sidesaddle Racers, who will face each other at the end of the Grandstand Show from July 7th to 8th. Experienced riders from across the province, runners will present historic equestrian horseback riding in skirts and dresses as women would have worn before the First World War, before the pants became an acceptable outfit.
Other entries from the 1988 Grandstand Show parade Eddie the Eagle Edwards, Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Kim, best known for his 1974 success, Rock Me Gently , as well as American actress Rachel Avery, appeared in the hit television series Scrubs and in the movie Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller
Marlowe explains that connecting the parade to the Grandstand Show is also a good way to introduce the Calgary Stampede to the thousands of new Calgarians who arrive in the city each year.
"We know the roots of the Calgary Stampede in this city. But at the same time, there are so many people who are new to our city and we want to be able to welcome them. We want to introduce them to what is the Stampede.
