HODGE'S COVE, N.L.

It is truly a rare artifact to have a first-hand account of the First World War of a veteran from Newfoundland.

Jim Peddle, son of sailor Archer Peddle, a sailor from Hodge's Cove, who served in the Royal Navy from 1913-1919, knows how special it is to have written his father's words several years after his death in 1974 .

Jim showed the manuscript, written by his father between 1958 and 1959, to Lester Green when he interviewed him for research in his column in The Packet, "Where Once They Sailed" – a series dedicated to men from Southwest Arm having served in the army. Royal Navy in the First World War.

Jim told The Packet that his father originally planned to publish the manuscript in order to earn extra income to cover his university costs.

After keeping the book and having the family make copies of it by his nephew Levi Churchill, Green suggested that Jim have it published.

"I'm pretty happy," he said. "People here can identify with her."

The book is entitled "A Newfoundland Sailor in the First World War: In War and on His Return" written by Archer Peddle in his own words with additions of Jean Stacey from DRC Publishing.

Lester Green told The Packet that he remembered when Jim had shown him the manuscript. After taking him home to read it, he could not believe the importance of the experience.

With the permission of his family, Green then invited RDC Publishing, who pledged to publish the memoir only hours after the conversation began, Green said.

"I am very proud when I look at the situation from one point of view, we have a personal story for the Navy – because there are very few stories of the Navy. Many members of the Newfoundland Regiment, but you are trying to find a personal account – there are not too many, "he says.

For those wishing to purchase a copy of the book or booklet produced by the Southwest Arm Historical Society, which pays tribute to the 87 Royal Navy veterans of the area, they can contact the Society. Peddle's book will also be on sale at the Clarenville Used Bookstore and at the Clarenville Cooperative.
