CAP CANAVERAL, Florida – The next lunar landing in the United States will be done by private companies – not by NASA.
NASA's Jim Bridenstine announced Thursday that nine US companies will compete for lunar surface experiments. According to Bridenstine, NASA will buy the service and let the private sector determine the details to achieve it.
The goal is to make scientific and technological experiments reach the surface of the moon as quickly as possible. The first flight could be next year. The year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first inhabited landing of the moon.
The announcement comes just three days after NASA landed on Mars. NASA wants to see how it goes on the moon before engaging in commercial delivery services on Mars.
