In September, he lured a 12-year-old girl into an abandoned building, where he and other youths beat her and kicked her and held a knife to her throat.
Then he choked her in unconsciousness.
Now, a Newfoundland judge has sentenced the boy to 10 months – less than 30 days for the time already spent – in detention and under surveillance.
Judge Wayne Gorman acknowledged that his son was troubled by life. He suffered from partial fetal alcohol syndrome and was removed from his parents' custody by one year of age due to inattention and drug abuse.
But Gorman rejected the Crown's and defense's proposals that the boy should not have custody in a safe place. The judge said that he was just not ready to return to the community.
"The rehabilitation of juvenile offenders is one of the primary objectives of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but it is not the only purpose of the legislation." In a case like this , the goal of protecting the public must also be emphasized, "Gorman told his sentencing decision this month.
"He is only 14 years old and desperately needs treatment and supervised control."
The boy's grandmother, who has custody of the children, told officials that she had limited control over the boy and feared what he could do to himself and to others, during his outings.

The boy and other children jumped out of school and went to an abandoned building, where they started attacking the 12-year-old girl, whom they thought was a "rat".

On his way back to school, he told her that he would kill her if she told anyone. He was arrested the next day.
The public prosecutor and the defense had recommended to the child sentenced to six months of open custody and under supervision, with probation. But Gorman said it would not help rehabilitate the boy – nor protect the public against him.
"(He) was involved in a premeditated and well planned aggression against a 12-year-old girl in order to avenge himself for what he (felt) to be a rat. (He) has little insight into his actions and showed little or no remorse.He showed no empathy for her, "said the judge.
"It is a danger to the public and his grandmother."
