OTTAWA – The Senate pbaded legislation to end a five-week rotating strike for Canadian postal workers.

Royal Assent is expected by one hour, which will allow the law to come into force Tuesday at noon.

Senators voted 53 to 25, with four abstentions, after two days of special sitting to debate the issue.

The bill was rushed into the House of Commons last week.

The government felt that the pbading of the bill was urgent because of the economic impact of the constant disruption of mail during the peak holiday period.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers argues that the law is unconstitutional and is committed to challenging it in court.
