What with all the new earnings reports lately, Nintendo has revealed that the Switch has reached another milestone by shifting 22.86 million units worldwide.

To put this figure into perspective, this new world sales figure has not only exceeded the lifetime sales of the Wii U but also the GameCube. As the GameCube only ambaded 21.74 million global sales.

These figures are also of the end of September, so do not include this month's global sales data.

In addition, Nintendo released an updated breakdown of the top ten selling Switch games worldwide.

  1. Super Mario Odyssey – 12.17 million units
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 11.71 million units
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 10.28 million units
  4. Splatoon 2 – 7.47 million units
  5. 1-2 Switch – 2.64 million units
  6. Mario Tennis Aces – 2.16 million units
  7. ARMS – 2.10 million units
  8. Kirby: Star Allies – 2.10 million units
  9. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – 1.67 million units
  10. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – 1.53 million units

While there is no question that Zelda: Breath of the Wild was an incredibly important launch title for the Switch, it is not the best-selling game on the system. Moreover, it was beaten by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was a port of a Wii U game.

The fact that Super Mario Odyssey has been such a huge success Breath of the Wild and has since gone over it in less time.

In my breakdown of last year Japanese games, I also listed Super Mario Odyssey in first place, again over Breath of the Wild, so the fact that my personal preference is also reflected in terms of global sales for the Switch is a nice surprise.

Overall, the Switch is doing well, and it's still very much a success, but it's still going well. Either through its own development resources and support from third-party publishers.
