Anthony Gaines, an independent wrestler from Cheektowaga, is the one who flew top rope. He faced Ace Romero, another New England freestyle wrestler who is considerably larger than the 207-pound Gaines. The match took place last Saturday during the Summer of Sleaze of Empire State Wrestling at the St. Johnsburg Fire Hall, north of Tonawanda.
The viral video captures 12 seconds of the match of about 15 minutes. In this one, both wrestlers start in the middle of the ring. Gaines looks towards the camera side of the ring, runs to the ropes and uses them to propel it towards the center of the ring.
At the same time, Romero heads for the strings to the left of the viewer before also using his ropes momentum to send him back to the middle, where the wrestlers meet. Romero pushes Gaines so hard that he flies on the ropes to the right of the viewer and 14 feet into the crowd. Referee Andrew Mollon immediately rushes into the ring to watch Gaines while the crowd of about 400 roars.
"We were shocked," said David Jarka, referee and publicist of the ESW league who was in the building last Saturday.
Gaines returned to the ring and continued the fight that he won. "He was shaken, but he was fine," said Jarka.
The movement seemed planned by the duo, but Jarka doubted that Gaines should be thrown out of the ring.
The ESW social media team sent the They thought it would find an audience online, but they did not realize how much it would explode, says Jarka.
