Thousands gather to watch fireworks from Vancouver's English Bay

Thousands of people marched on the beaches of English Bay to watch the first night of the Vancouver Celebration of Light fireworks festival

. The festival, now in its 28th year, features three countries. barge moored in English Bay.

Fireworks for Africa from South Africa began the festival on Saturday.

The Vancouver Police Department globally stated that the event went smoothly with few problems

"Great event, family event"

100 spills of alcohol, including Cst. Jason Doucette said it was an average number for the magnitude of the event.

There were also some peace violations and an arrest for a stolen backpack. Doucette said the bag was returned to its owner

"Overall, it was a big event, a family event," he said

On Wednesday, the unique Swedish pyrotechnics will take off, followed next Saturday by South Korea's Daehan Fireworks Co.

All performances begin at 10 pm. PT. and CBC will broadcast the shows on its website and Facebook page

Loving the big crowds

The three teams were to design their shows this year around the theme of love.

We expect 15,000 people to take transport to events every night.
