Toronto council could shrink to 25 – here's how cities around the world compare

Ontario Premier Doug Ford pledged to reduce Toronto City Council by nearly half, from 47 to 25 councilors.

The Premier has stated that reducing council seats would save the City of Toronto money $ 25.5 million over four years. A spokesman for Ford said the number reflects the amount the city spends annually for each advisor, or about $ 290,000 per neighborhood.

The City of Toronto currently has a Mayor and a 47-seat council, which serve 47 rooms. This gives an average population per neighborhood of about 62,082.

Each district directly elects its elected councilor who sits on the council.

The new configuration would have a mayor and a council of 25 seats. That would give an average population per district of 109,262.

Los Angeles, population of 4.0 million

LA has a larger population than Toronto, but fewer councilors. His council is made up of 15 seats plus the mayor, which gives an average population per councilor of 266,651.
