It's not hard to argue that HBO True detective was a television phenomenon. The first season, which began in 2014, was a sinister and disturbing interpretation of the procedural drama, with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing the role of two homicide detectives suing a serial killer in Louisiana. It was a Southern gothic show, brilliantly filmed by director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and a new voice distinct from the creator Nic Pizzolatto.

And then there was the second season, which started the next year. With Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn, True detective Season two was a puffy and winding mess that did not help to regain the bad mood of the original. (The absence of Fukunaga was pretty obvious.) The critics were divided. it has always attracted millions of viewers for HBO. But the show lost momentum and the future of the series seemed uncertain.

Three years later, we are looking for the third season for the first time. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali's first trailer for the new season seems to offer everything that made the first season such a success: dark philosophical monologues, the mysterious Americana track, dark cinematography and what appears to be Complex chronology that sees Ali donning old age makeup as his likely haunted cop looks back at the case he has never forgotten.
