On the first night of Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month in Ontario, at least 17 pedestrians were blocked by vehicles in the Greater Toronto Area, including a fatal collision in Brampton.
Paramedics told CP24 that a woman from Brampton had been declared dead after being hit by a vehicle in the south of the city.
On Friday morning, in an email to CTVNews.ca, the Toronto Police Service Traffic Services confirmed that there had been 16 collisions in their jurisdiction overnight.
Among these collisions, there is one in west Toronto that has left a 90-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.
Police say they have more collisions at this time of year due in part to changing weather conditions, fewer hours of daylight and time change.
"Families need to take the time to discuss these issues and commit to making decisions safely," said the sergeant. Brett Moore, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Department of Police Services, wrote in an email. "The speed, the distractions, the aggression, the cleaning of the rain and the snow of the vehicles increase the security."
November is Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month in Ontario, where the province's Ministry of Transportation will share safety tips with pedestrians and drivers.
