Victim identified following a shootout during the day in Surrey

CBC News has learned the identity of a man who was shot and killed in Surrey, British Columbia on Monday morning.

Close friends confirmed that Raj Sangha, 41, was the man killed in 14600 block of Southview Drive around 11:45.

The RCMP stated that he was found shot and wounded and died on the spot, despite efforts to resuscitate him. The homicide investigators have taken over the case.

Sangha was a well-known promoter of Bhangra in the city. In 2011, he was successful in violating human rights against the Sheraton Wall Center after stating that he was treated unfairly "simply because his organization was involved in the music and dance badociated with people belonging to to Punjabi ".

Police said the area around Monday's crime scene would remain sealed for an indefinite time during the shooting investigation.
