The Mayor of St. John's is encouraged by the growing number of people who visit the annual Duckworth Memorial War Memorial on an annual basis.
July 1 marks the anniversary of one of the largest losses in the history of Newfoundland. That day, in 1916, members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment pbaded the Beaumont Hamel summit on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, directly in the fire of German soldiers.

The following day, only 68 soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment responded to the call. 324 were killed and 386 were injured. It was one of the biggest losses the Dominion of Newfoundland suffered and touched almost every community.
Mayor Danny Breen says that attendance at the annual Memorial Day ceremony has increased over the years and he says it's good to see so many young people aware of the sacrifices made and remembering the lost lives and left behind him.
Today 's service will be held this morning at 11:00 am.
Prime Minister Dwight Ball is part of a delegation in France and participates in the annual Memorial Day service at Beaumont Hamel.
