WATERLOO REGION – A 21-year-old veteran of the Waterloo Regional Police has been charged with attempted murder following the death of a man in Cambridge in March.
Sgt. Richard Dorling is also charged with aggravated badault, willful discharge from a firearm and endangering a firearm, said Wednesday the Special Investigations Unit.
On March 31, Hamilton police were investigating a break-in at a property in Flamborough. A car was stolen. The Hamilton police followed up to Cambridge and notified the Waterloo Regional Police Service, who responded.
"One of the officers located the man and one interaction occurred," said the UES. "The officer unloaded his firearm at the man several times.The man was hit once and transported to the hospital for treatment."
The shooting took place at 4:45 pm near Highway 401 near Dickie Settlement Road in Cambridge. The man who was shot is 30 years old. It has not been identified by the UES.
The man "suffered enough injuries for the SIU to carry out its mandate," said the Waterloo Regional Police in a press release.
Dorling was arrested Tuesday by members of the UES and released. He was ordered not to communicate with the man who was shot and who can not own a firearm. He will appear in Kitchener Court on December 19th.
Dorling is suspended with salary.
The Waterloo Regional Police has stated that its Professional Standards Branch "will also conduct a review of the circumstances once the court proceedings are over."
The police made inquiries to the USSU through the media, who stated that "taking into account the interest of the accused for a fair trial, the police will not be able to do anything about it. UES will not make any other comments about this investigation. "
