We only spotted 1 to 100 asteroids big enough to wipe out Germany

Scientists have spotted only one asteroid out of 100, big enough to destroy Germany, an expert warned – and they could strike almost without warning.

The expert from the European Space Agency (ESA) Dr. Detlef Koschny says that and one kilometer (0.6 mile wide) may have been missed by the scans of the sky.

Rocks of this size could cause "significant damage". to an area the size of Germany, warns Koschny

AAAARGH!

Koschny said, "We mapped 90 percent of the asteroids that are one kilometer or more. We know exactly where the big ones are and that they will not pose a threat. In the "average" region, the situation is completely different: we have only detected and mapped less than one per cent of NEOs of less than one kilometer. "

" If a 100-meter asteroid reached the Earth, it would cause damage in an area the size of Germany, and even affect the surrounding area. But asteroids of this size do not hit Earth very often. Maybe every 10,000 years on average.

But Koschny warns that small rocks, like the asteroid that exploded on Chelyabinsk in Russia in 2013 , 100 years old

At the event of Chelyabinsk in 2013, 1500 people were injured and 7300 buildings damaged by the Intense overpressure generated by the shockwave on the surface of the Earth.
