Environment Canada issued a wind warning for Calgary as severe storm warnings and tornadoes were issued for much of central Alberta on Friday.

Issued just after 8 pm, the warnings cover several areas, including:

  • Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey and Pigeon Lake
  • Drumheller and Three Hills
  • Hanna, Coronation, Oyen
  • Leduc, Camrose , Wetaskiwin and Tofield
  • Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermilion, and Provost
  • Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail, and Stettler

"A cold front across Alberta tonight triggers thunderstorms and thunderstorms continue to move east and southeast until the evening, "read the warning.

A tornado watch was also in place for the Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds and Sundre regions.

"It's a dangerous and potentially deadly situation," reads the warning.

The storms also caused strong gusts of wind blowing in Calgary, causing damage and power outages, which caused a wind warning.

The warning says that winds up to 100 km / h have been reported.
