Canadiens goaltender Carey Price to be “away from the team while participating in the NHL / NHLPA Volunteer Player Assistance Program,” the NHL and NHLPA announcement Thusday.
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has said Price will need to be in the program for at least 30 days, but acknowledges he could be out of the squad for a much longer period. However, he said he was confident Price would be back with the squad before the end of the season.
“Today, I don’t think of Carey Price, the goalie of the Montreal Canadiens, but of Carey Price, the human being,” Bergevin told the media Thursday morning.
Price’s wife Angela posted on Instagram that being in front of the public eye allows their family “to show how he exists and can be a path to light for anyone in trouble.”
“Carey is showing up for him and our family and making the best possible decision for us,” she wrote. “And it is extremely important for us to show our children that asking for help and being supported by others is not only acceptable, but encouraged – at all times and under all circumstances.”
The NHL and the NHL Players Association launched the Player Assistance Program in 1996. The jointly funded program assists players and their families with mental health, addiction and other issues. Advisors are available in every NHL city.
Price, 34, was 12-7-5, recording a 2.64 goals-against average and 0.901 save percentage, with one shutout last season. Price also underwent surgery in the offseason to repair a torn meniscus.
