DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa officials are warning residents about a disease in dogs that can be passed on to humans.

Dr. Jeff Kaisand, a state veterinarian, has confirmed several cases of "canine brucellosis" from a commercial dog breeding facility in Marion County, Iowa. According to the Public Health Department of Iowa, this disease only affects dogs and humans.

"We are warning the people who have the custody of the exposed dogs," said Friday a press release issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. 39; Iowa. "Animals and facilities are quarantined while dogs undergo clinical tests."

Those who have recently bought a puppy from Marion County should have their pet tested, said Kaisand. Pet owners and those who come into contact with animals are advised to wash their hands regularly.

"The threat to most animal owners is considered very low," reads the statement. "Dog breeders, veterinary personnel and anyone who comes in contact with blood, tissues and fluids during delivery may be at higher risk and should consult their primary care physician."

The disease is more common in kennels and breeding facilities, the Iowa Public Health Department said.

An animal adoption service based in De Soto, Iowa, was posted Friday on Facebook about the disease. AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transportation reported that a breeder in Knoxville, Iowa, had dogs that tested positive. A call to Amy Heinz, the relief owner, has not been returned yet.
