UPDATE: October 4, 2021 at 4:45 p.m.

A car crashed into the building of Harvard Lampoon, a semi-secret social organization in Sorrento Square that occasionally publishes a so-called comedy magazine, late Sunday night.

In a video reviewed by The Crimson, a gray Ford sedan can be seen driving on the Mt. Auburn Street bike path. The car turned to the left in an apparent attempt to bypass a post, knocking over a parking meter and traffic sign before driving to the side of the Lampoon building.

The Cambridge Police Department and Cambridge Fire Department responded to the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was not injured after the accident. The Lampoon building retained little damage from the accident, with one of its lower windows shattered.

Several Lampoon members came out of the building to inspect the scene. Maxwell A. Gay ’21 -’22, president of Lampoon, declined to comment on the scene.

CPD spokesman Jeremy C. Warnick confirmed in an email that the crash did not damage The Lampoon building and the driver was not injured. The driver was ordered to appear in court for driving an uninsured vehicle.

“The driver reported losing control of his vehicle due to heavy rain,” Warnick wrote. “The operator was not injured and refused medical treatment. They were summoned for driving a motor vehicle with revoked insurance and an uninsured motor vehicle.

Nathan Sun ’24, a senior editor at Crimson Business, said he had just walked past the Lampoon on his way to his DeWolfe Street apartment around midnight. He reported hearing a car swerve behind him, noting that the roads were slippery from the rain.

“At first I thought someone had crushed a pothole or something. But I look back and there was just this car that hit the Lampoon and then the horn sounded, ”Sun said.

Jordan H. Barton ’23 Released a video on Twitter showing the aftermath of the accident.

In an email, Barton wrote that they lived at Adams House, near Plympton Street, where they had a clear view of emergency vehicles heading to the Lampoon building.

“Although my roommates and I were not at street level, our windows were open, so we heard the first accident – a sudden spin of the wheels, then a loud thud – at street level, then we heard the car horn which started to sound and didn’t stop for at least 10 minutes, ”Barton wrote.

Pierre J. Lamont-Dobbin ’24 stated that the driver of the car got out of the vehicle and appeared to be fine when he saw the damage to his car.

“I was in my house in my dorm in Adams right there and we just heard a giant crash, then the horn. We literally thought it was thunder. And then I just had my roommate. I was like, ‘Let’s go make sure everyone’s okay,’ ”said Lamont-Dobbin.

In 2019, a vehicle crashed into the Crimson building when trying to park on Plympton Street. The driver was slightly injured and the building was slightly damaged.
