Career Day is back at FRC

One of the fall traditions in Quincy appears to have become the annual College and Career Day at Feather River College, where high school students from across the county converge to hear an inspiring speech and check out the booths of local businesses and organizations, combined with regional colleges. and universities for seniors and FRC students to consider regarding their future.

Last year, of course, this event could not take place due to COVID. This year was also different from the past in that instead of combining students from all schools and putting everyone in the closed multi-purpose building, the students largely stayed in their school’s cohorts and only the students were inside in their cohorts to listen to the guest speaker. . Guest speaker — Dr. April Leonardo, and family medicine practitioner at Plumas District Hospital, presented students with an inspiring talk about her own life and life experiences.

Students listened to Leonardo recap his adventures with a slide presentation, and commented on several occasions how impressed they were with both his profession – a doctor – and his hobbies – which include climbing Mount Everest.

“Unique and well balanced. I was really impressed with her. This [her presentation] was really interesting, ”said Maddy Samuelson, senior QHS.

Leonardo stressed that students should stretch out and think about doing what is best for them personally rather than doing what others expect of them.

Students visited some of the popular programs offered by Feather River College as well as some unique attractions, such as the Fish Hatchery, which originally started as a project of an associate faculty member.

Finally, the students made their way to the mound of grass in front of the multi-purpose building where this year’s college and business booths were located. The students walked around asking questions to the presenters who then signed on their sheets that they had spoken with the presenters, a good public speaking practice for young people.

While fewer booths were filled compared to previous years and the scorching sun was definitely a challenge, everyone seemed happy to be back at work or attending this FRC fall tradition.
