Anyone who watched an Eagles losing streak to the Seahawks on Monday could say quarterback Carson Wentz does not pass the eye test in 2020. But Wentz’s stats this season are on par with Brett Favre and Peyton Manning – and not in a good way.
After 11 games, Wentz completed 58.1% of his passes for 2,541 yards with 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in the league lead. His passer rating is 73.4, well below the league average. And that’s well under the 98.3 rating of Wentz’s last three seasons combined.
This is where the Favre and Manning comparisons come in. According to research by Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s NFL, Wentz is only the sixth quarterback since 1950 the passer’s rating drops by 24 points under his combined rating over the previous three seasons. He is also the first quarterback to do so before the age of 30.
The other quarters on the list? At 38, YA Tittle lost 42.2 points in 1964. Manning lost 39.9 points to 39 in 2015. Joe Theisman lost 32.0 points to 36 in 1985. Mark Rypien lost 26.3 points to 31 in 1993. And Favre lost 24.8 points to 41 in 2010..
All of those quarterbacks retired after their drop season except Rypien.
No one expects Wentz to hang up after 2020, but the quarterback needs to improve significantly in the future.
