Ask and you will receive, apparently. Yesterday, we introduced the Philadelphia Eagles as an emerging business candidate in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft for the Miami Dolphins. But if and only if the Eagles agreed on a trade to fire veteran quarterback Carson Wentz.
No less than a few hours later, the deed was done. Wentz will be an Indianapolis Colt in 2021 and the Philadelphia Eagles are likely now looking at another quarterback decision this offseason despite Jalen Hurts being selected in the 2nd round of the 2020 NFL Draft. And the Miami Dolphins can absolutely be helpful in Philadelphia’s attempt to secure a top quarterback.
But it won’t be as easy as we suggested yesterday.
Because, as we pointed out when exploring the dynamics of a possible Eagles & Dolphins trade to reverse the No.3 and 6 picks in the April NFL Draft, the obvious parallel to draw was the Colts and Jets trade in 2018 for Sam Darnold. The deal saw the Jets send two 2nd round picks the same year and another the following year to Indianapolis to reverse the picks. But the Philadelphia Eagles, based on Wentz’s terms of trade at the Colts, don’t have two 2nd round picks this year. Because the Colts refused to send a second-round pick to Philadelphia in 2021 for Wentz.
The Eagles acquired the 85th overall pick in 2021 and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2022 that could become a 1st round pick depending on Wentz’s performance in Indianapolis – which casts a bit of cold water on our initial proposition. from yesterday:

No. 6 overall
No. 37 overall
# 52 overall or # 54 overall (assuming trade with Chicago or Indianapolis for Wentz)

The best the Eagles could do now based on that line of thinking is to send one 2nd round pick in 2021 and two in 2022; and even then, they may not have two second-round picks if Wentz qualifies to move the Colts’ pick to a first round.
It gets complicated now because the Eagles can’t guarantee they have the choices necessary to replicate the Darnold trade. And Miami should rightly want a better payout for 2021 to come out of No.3 overall rather than just adding a 2nd round pick. So this possibility is not dead; not far away. But the Eagles’ desperation to get a top-3 quarterback will determine whether or not Miami can reverse that deal; because the Dolphins aren’t going to give Philadelphia a discount just because they got an immediate bad comeback for Wentz.
