Cat Power has announced a new cover album. Blankets releases January 14 via Domino. She shared her version of Frank Ocean’s Orange channel single “Bad Religion”, plus a cover of “A Pair of Brown Eyes” by the Pogues on the record. Chan Marshall also performed “Bad Religion” last night on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Listen to both songs and watch her performance below.

The album features covers of songs from Iggy Pop, Bob Seger, Dead Man’s Bones (Ryan Gosling’s band), Jackson Browne, The Replacements, Nick Cave, Billie Holiday, and more. Find the tracklist and illustrations below.

Her cover of “Bad Religion” took shape when she began performing her 2018 song “In Your Face” Vagabond on tour, according to a press release. “This song made me feel depressed,” Marshall said. “So I started to take out the lyrics to ‘Bad Religion’ and sing it instead of getting very depressed. Playing covers is a really nice way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.

In the years that followed Vagabond, Marshall worked on the music for the documentary Echo in the Canyon and Sean Penn’s feature film Flag day. She also covered last year “Toop Toop” by Cassius in homage to the late Philippe Zdar. Marshall said in a statement that his cover of “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Billie Holiday was a tribute to Zdar.
