Cayuga County area schools report over 100 COVID-19 cases in two weeks

All but one school district in the BOCES system in Cayuga-Onondaga has reported cases of COVID-19 …

In August, the county reported 747 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The rise continued this month. As of Sunday, the county had 949 new cases in September.

The local health department admitted 82 additional cases over a three-day period, with a narrower split between unvaccinated (46) and vaccinated (36) people. This flies in the face of a trend seen since Aug. 23, when the department began disclosing the vaccination status of new cases. During this period, there were 1,277 new cases, of which two-thirds (855) were unvaccinated.

As cases increase, hospitalizations are also on the rise. Based on reports from four hospitals in the area, the health department said there were 20 residents of Cayuga County, including 14 unvaccinated, hospitalized with COVID-related illnesses. The youngest of the patients is less than 10 years old.

Twelve of the 20 patients are aged 60 or over. Three are in their fifties, two are in their forties and two are in their thirties.

Cayuga County’s vaccination rate is approaching 60% among its eligible population aged 12 and over. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 59.5% of eligible residents and 60.8% of adults aged 18 and over are fully immunized.

Overall, 52% of county residents are fully immunized.

Two vaccination clinics will be held this week in Cayuga County. The health department will be holding a walk-in clinic from 2 pm to 3 pm Tuesday at CIMVAC, 2496 W. Main St., Cato. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be offered at the clinic.
