NEW YORK CENTER – It has stopped raining just in time for the Cazenovia field hockey team to officially honor head coach Lorraine Scheftic for reaching the 300-win plateau in last Friday’s game against Oneida.
After reaching that milestone on September 17 with a win at Cato-Meridian, the Lakers continued from there and, with more success last week, extended their winning streak to five games.
Cazenovia returned to Cayuga County last Wednesday to face longtime rival Weedsport and played a particularly strong second quarter to knock out the Warriors 5-0.
Scoring three times during that period after taking a 1-0 lead early on, the Lakes were led by Ainsley Schug, who eventually recorded a three-goal hat trick.
Reid McMurtrie was also one of them, eventually winning two assists for his only goal as Sammy Sparks scored the other goal. Sophie Clancy and Emily Forrett came in with assists.
Then it was back to Burton Street to take on Oneida, and amid all the celebrations and festivities for Scheftic, Cazenovia didn’t forget the game itself.
In fact, the Lakers wereted no time, sprinting past the Indians 3-0 before the end of the first quarter and, after a quiet mid-game spell, converting twice more in the last period.
It meant another 5-0 victory, with Hadley Schug scoring twice and securing an assist, while single goals went to Sparks, Cady Webb and Nadia Segal. Forrett got two assists, with Ainsley Schug also getting an assist.
At 6-2 halfway down their regular-season roster, the Lakers would aim for six in a row on Tuesday against Clinton before visiting Homer on Friday afternoon.
