With so much going on around the City College community, The Channels wants to provide one place for the most important information. We will compile a weekly list of current and upcoming events to keep readers up to date with campus news.
– Alondra Lazaro Gonzalez announced The Basic Needs Center has been officially open for in-person services since August 26th. BNC offers programs like Food Pantry and CalFresh Assistance, which help City College students meet their needs. At the Food Pantry, students can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, non-perishable food, drinks, cereals, and even toiletries, all for free. Along with these services, Love’s Clothing Closet will be available soon. The opening date has not yet been announced.
The BNC is now located at ECC 14 on the east campus. Students are welcome Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
– After about a year and a half, Utpal Goswami stepped down as superintendent-president last July. He continued as a consultant for the month following his request for transition assistance. Goswami said in a press release: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Superintendent-President of the SBCC. I wish the CCSC the best and look forward to hearing about the great strides the institution will make. “
– Vampire Murillo was selected as Acting Superintendent-President of Santa Barbara City College at a special board meeting on Friday August 20. Murillo has over 24 years of experience in the California Community College System, of which 13 years she was Superintendent-President of two districts – Lake Tahoe and Southwestern.
Responding to the board’s decision, board chairman Peter Haslund said he looks forward to working with Murillo and how he believes she will be a perfect fit for the college. “I think we have a winner. Kindred Murillo is a very experienced Superintendent-President who models the idea of collaborative engagement in the decision-making process.
– Santa Barbara City College received $ 20 million by philanthropist Mackenzie Scott last June. City College plans to use this to benefit from its dedication to each student’s success. With his endowment, Scott said, “Higher education is a proven pathway, so we looked for two- and four-year institutions to successfully educate students from chronically underserved communities.”
“I would like to thank MacKenzie Scott for the trust placed in us,” said former Superintendent-President Utpal Goswami. “These funds will allow us to implement transformative initiatives that will shape our community college of the future and provide the margin of excellence that we seek.”
