CDC Advisory Board Recommends J&J Single Dose Covid Vaccine

“This vaccine is also another important tool in our toolkit to equitably vaccinate as many people as possible, as quickly as possible,” Walensky said in a statement.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the first single-dose vaccine authorized in the United States and is easier to store and transport than the two-dose Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. For this reason, it will be particularly useful in rural communities and for hard-to-reach populations.

The details: The shot was found to be 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe Covid-19 at least 28 days after vaccination, and 85% effective in preventing severe to critical Covid during the same period, according to the FDA.

The efficacy rate of the J&J vaccine is lower than that of the Pfizer and Moderna injections, which were found to be 95% and 94%, respectively. Public health officials warn rates do not offer comparisons between apples and the J&J trial may offer a better measure of how the company’s vaccine compares to new, more transmissible strains of Covid that are proliferating in the world.

“I think we need to get away from that comparison and analyzing numbers until you compare them face to face. Be truly grateful that we have three truly effective vaccines, ”Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease specialist, said on ABC“ This Week ”on Sunday.

A senior administration official told reporters that Biden’s team had ordered states to distribute the three vaccines evenly across all populations. The official said the federal government is closely monitoring the distribution of states and whether fairness measures are being met.

And after: The Biden administration has announced that around 4 million J&J vaccines will be sent this week, including 2 million in states and an additional 2 million in pharmacies and community health centers.

The vaccine will be delivered to states and other localities as early as Tuesday morning, according to the senior administration official. The J&J dose will be assigned based on the state population, like the other two vaccines.

The company told lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week that it plans to deliver 20 million vaccines by the end of March and 100 million by the end of June. The senior administration official said J&J told the government its weekly supply will be limited for the next two weeks after this week’s initial distribution.

Federal health officials have suggested there will be enough Covid vaccines by April or June for the general population to access vaccines without delay.

The CDC advisory committee will meet again on Monday to discuss clinical considerations for Covid-19 vaccines, as well as an update on vaccine safety. Members will also discuss the threat of emerging variants that have been identified in more than 40 states.
